ABSTRACT
Education has historically been a significant (and controversial) religious and political force in Ireland, but the state did not accept a comprehensive responsibility for schools and higher and further instruction until the twentieth century. Education was for centuries organized by religious, charitable, private and royal bodies, which reflected social class and economic conditions, and reached a minority of students.
