ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the extent to which privacy rights need to be sacrificed in order to keep schools safe. Five cases represent a gamut of school safety dilemmas ranging from gang membership, suspected drug use, and first-responder hostage situations to issues of confidentiality and student threats. Each dilemma juxtaposes the privacy rights of the individual-parent, student, teacher-and the possible threat of danger to those persons and/or to the entire school community.
