ABSTRACT

In prison systems such as the European systems where enabling prisoners to lead a crime-free life in the future, their preparation for release and ensuring reintegration into life in the community are the official aims of the execution of prison sentences, treatment for prisoners and offending behaviour treatment in particular should have a prominent place in the regime and in individual sentence planning. It requires a considerable effort from the ministerial administration and the prison service to provide the resources for a comprehensive treatment programme in the prison estate. But also on the level of individual prisons, a major effort is needed to draft a treatment concept that takes into account research findings and is at the same time open for new insights or specific problems of their prisoner population, and then to implement the concept, to motivate prisoners and to actually provide effective treatment.
