ABSTRACT

People seem to have a conflicted relationship with advertising. Sometimes we find advertising entertaining and surprising and cool-Super Bowl ads on television and videos that go viral online are examples. But sometimes advertising is irritating-like when you are forced to watch an ad before you can access a webpage or when a movie’s start time is delayed 15 minutes to show ads to the theatre audience. Like it or not, advertising is pervasive in society. It is especially prevalent in mass media, as advertising is central to media’s business models. Media such as broadcast television, radio, and magazines get most or sometimes all of their revenue from advertising. Even if we feel like we avoid watching commercials on TV or online, advertising inevitably trickles into our daily routines in a variety of ways, including bill - boards, signs on buses and park benches, and through product packaging.
