ABSTRACT

Gender Health for NP students is a required course, and the content is on the national certification exams, the successful completion of which is required for licensure and practice. This is a master’s level course taught within the College of Nursing at the University of Central Florida (UCF), the second-largest public university in the nation and the largest in Florida (www. ucf.edu). Students’ ages and experiences as Registered Nurses are quite varied, ranging from those who have recently graduated from a bachelor of nursing program to those with 20 or more years of nursing experience. Forty-four students were registered for this course. The goal of the course is to provide the content necessary for students to deliver evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and economical reproductive health care to women and men. This course had previously been taught as a web-mediated (hybrid) course with approximately 50 percent of teaching time spent face-to-face. For example, in a 16-week semester, students met every other week in the classroom for a two-hour class session. Online content had consisted of readings, web-based materials, and asynchronous discussions. Face-to-face time had included a traditional lecture component, answering students’ questions, and testing.
