ABSTRACT
THE LAWS OF MEASUREMENT IN ATOMIC PHYSICS
THE foundations of the quantum theory are the laws of measurement in atomic physics, i.e. the general principles of the interpretation of experimental observations made on the ultimate elements of the physical world. The surprising conclusion to be drawn from these principles is that the physical characteristics of the ultimate elements are appropriately represented in mathematical language not by ordinary numbers but by linear operaiors of the type studied in the first chapter.
