ABSTRACT
THE last century has seen such a development of scientific knowledge that the time is past when any one person can hope to have a detailed understanding of the whole field of science. Around the fireside we may be wiseacres, understanding everything from stainless steel to smoky chimneys, but there is no scientific man who would dare to claim expert knowledge about many different problems. Take that little packed cylinder of tobacco you. may be smoking at the moment-I do not know a single scientist who would claim to know all about tobacco-growing, about the manufacture and composition of cigarette paper, and whether smoking is harmful or not. Yet these are only three of the many highly technicaI questions one might discuss.
