ABSTRACT
I HAVE tried to show science at work behind the scenes in order that two things might be appreciated : first, the close contact with concrete things that science persistently maintains, and secondly, that nowadays scientific work is not an individual activity but a corporate undertaking.· It is carried on by large groups of workers dependent one upon the other for help, understanding, and verification -public verification I called it, in order to distinguish it from personal or private belief.
