ABSTRACT

Because of the volcanic nature of the Japanese archipelago, the Japanese people have experienced many and frequent natural disasters, such as typhoons, volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. The Japanese have handled disasters in a unique way based on their culture. In this chapter, the case of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of 2011 will be discussed, focusing on disaster preparedness, disaster response and disaster mental health in Japan in the context of the Japanese culture. Recommendations that are applicable for the future will be addressed.
