ABSTRACT

When Disneyland was being constructed, Walt Disney used to have the park engineers kneel down on their knees to view an attraction or something he had in mind. Why did he do this? To help them to gain the perspective of children, the most frequent guests at the park. For some peo ple, learning that others see things differently than they do is a revelation. They assume that what they see is the way it is. These assumptions often lead to problems when the other person is acting out of a different viewpoint and “not making sense.” Therapy can present parents, chil dren, and adolescents with an opportunity to listen to each other and learn to appreciate all per spectives. In the safety of the therapy session, people will often reveal parts of themselves that they are unwilling to share in a more threatening environment. The purpose of this exercise is to help therapists invite parents, children, and adolescents to begin to share themselves, and see the varying perspectives of others.
