ABSTRACT

This exercise is designed to help therapists and parents to identify patterns that maintain problems. To do this, it’s important that therapists recognize that problematic actions and inter actions occur in context. They occur at certain times, in certain places, last for different lengths of time, and so on. To learn about these aspects of context we ask questions about “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” and “how.” We call these 4WH questions. They can help us to get a clearer idea of what needs to change and to determine the aspects of the context within which the patterns exist. Then, therapists can work with clients to change, alter, and disrupt those patterns.
