ABSTRACT

The last fifteen years have seen an increase in the empirical and clinical investigation of drug abuse in the United States. However, for the most part, the literature has not addressed the extent of the problem among Latinos * nor the specific treatment needs of this population. This article proposes to: Examine the problem of drug abuse and addiction among Latinos; review the role of the family among Latinos substance abusers, and present ongoing work toward the development of a framework of therapy that integrates cultural and social processes in its approach to drug abuse.
