ABSTRACT

In our society we are daily bombarded with images from the mass media. The average American watches hours of television daily, every hour of which is filled with images–both within the programs and in the advertisements which sponsor them. Magazines are filled with advertising images and billboards stare down at us from roadsides and urban buildings, showing us more images. Images appear to us in books, newspapers, catalogs, and junk mail. Our brains process many thousands of images daily. Many times we skim over or glance past these images, scarcely noticing them. If that is the case, do these images really have an effect on us, or are they merely scenery fading into the background of our daily activities?
