ABSTRACT

In this chapter a theoretical basis is constructed that accounts for many of the differences between instrumental and intuitive grief. The chapter be gins by revisiting grief as a concept and identifying a model of emotion. Then, a comprehensive model of grief is constructed and the chapter goes on to elaborate on the function and development of the structures and mechanisms responsible for differences among grievers. Finally, the agents that shape the development and influence the individual's unique pat tern of responding to loss are introduced.
