ABSTRACT

Prior chapters have presented therapists with research findings and traditional family therapy theory and therapy techniques applicable to the single parent. This chapter describes what some believe is a paradigmatic shift in the field of family therapy and represents leading-edge theoretical formulations in the field. This current theory is illustrated with case material. Social construction theory and therapy has profound implications for how we do therapy and how we view our clients, and provides a framework whereby we can examine our own biases and assumptions about the divorce experience (intimacy dissolution) and being a single parent.
