ABSTRACT

So far in this book, we have been exploring the idea that our culture is becoming more psychological, that it develops or evolves. We are also examining the key role that the individual plays in this process of cultural evolution. Individuals can actively shape the cultural evolution of their time and in turn be shaped by their time. I call this the capacity for destiny, which was illustrated through the stories of progressive leaders in Part I. The idea of destiny, as a capacity, supports our recognition of the ways in which personal and cultural identities pull each other forward.
