From Ancestor to Child

The image of the savage as child-like began to be widespread by the middle of the 19th century, and its effects lasted a long time. As recently as the 1950s, when I lived in West Africa, some of the ‘old coasters’ among the Europeans would still call an elderly African servant ‘boy’. The image has a pre-history concerning mainly the American savages that has been described in previous chapters.
