ABSTRACT

Thus the superior European waxes sentimental over 'his man Friday', who is utterly dependent on his 'master'. Friday, however, had not always been such a model servant: before meeting Crusoe, he had been a cannibal; and Crusoe had had to wean hirn off a 'hankering [after human ftesh] stornach' and teach hirn civilized ways. Robinson Crusoe has been rightly described as 'a colonial romance' ,I since it portrays the way in which the man-eating savage becomes tamed and dominated by the superior European.
