ABSTRACT

Four people are the subject of this chapter. They, with their companions, are seated round a table. On the table will be a piece of white paper, perhaps 65cm × 130cm, large brushes, paints and pastels, water and mixing bowls. In my capacity as art therapist I may encourage the telling of a story, perhaps one I have already heard from a participant before. Sometimes I will tell one which I guess will resonate with the life experience of one or more members of this group. We begin with a silence during which images and symbols may arise in our minds. First one, then another, will begin to paint. From the moment we begin we also begin a journey full of wonder and surprise, lament and hope.
