ABSTRACT

In this chapter I want to take the reader ‘through the therapist’s door’, to demystify the process of art therapy in my work with groups of bereaved children. In recent years there have been a growing number and variety of griefwork groups organised for children of all ages throughout the world. In the UK the most well publicised include Winston’s Wish and the Good Grief programme (Ward 1989). I want to explore the particular contribution art therapy has to offer such work. I shall describe in detail the art therapy component of an adolescent griefwork group that was organised by St Helena Hospice in Colchester. In doing so I hope to explore a variety of issues, both within the discipline of art therapy itself, and for my work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
