Peacock was fifty-seven w hen the E u ph ra tes flotilla was broken up, leaving only the Nitocris in I ra q to be em ployed by the E ast In d ia C om pany for survey and o ther work. H e had been appo in ted E xam iner a t the In d ia H ouse in 1836 and held th a t post un til his re tirem ent in 1856, one year before the ou tb reak of the In d ia n M utiny th a t led to the transfer o f au tho rity from the C om pany to the B ritish governm ent in 1858.
