ABSTRACT

Margery Perham’s broadcasting career spanned a period of forty-three years. There have been a number of people, therefore, who shared with her the often curiously intense relationship that the pressures of broadcasting bring about. A proper study of Margery as a broadcaster would canvass opinions and memories from producers in the various services to which she contributed – including Schools, General Overseas, African, Caribbean, Home Talks. All that I myself have been able to do is to spend a few hours in the BBC archives and in the Perham archive at Rhodes House, in order if possible to round out, or test out, my own memories of her and my own opinion of her qualities formed over a number of years as a BBC talks producer. From this some points seemed to emerge which I believe have a bearing on the interpretation of aspects of her career as they were presented at the conference.
