ABSTRACT

‘Lugard died on April 11th’, wrote Margery Perham in 1945, … ‘and before long I shall write the record of his long life.’ 1 She went on to write several pages of her opinions of his character and achievements in order, it would seem, to have something on paper of her immediate judgement of him, based on the memories of their work together, before she plunged into the immense task that lay before her. It was a task that would take her fifteen years to complete.
