ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to characterize the kinds of mathematical goals that emerge in children’s activities during the Purchase Phase of the practice as they select and buy a box of candy in wholesale stores. Though the focus in this chapter is on the seller’s purchase of boxes in the stores, store clerks may provide assistance in pricing for retail sale (Prepare-to-Sell Phase) and sometimes may direct children to other shops that contain other types of candy for which children are looking (Prepare-to-Purchase Phase). As a consequence, analyses of these transitional phases are also reported.
