ABSTRACT
Patti appears to be very much like other 14-year-olds starting ninth grade in a small high school in a rural midwestern town. She wants to be accepted by her peer group and carefully dresses to look older than her small size would suggest. She hopes this year to make the basketball team and participate in cross country track, even though in other years she had to drop out when she got sick.
