ABSTRACT

This chapter argues for a more holistic systems approach to the complex topic of civil society and governance. It contributes to emerging scholarship in the field of civil society governance by highlighting two ways in which civil society organizations have a unique impact or role to fill. First, the authors establish an important link between “internal” (organizational) and “external” (societal) governance. Second, they highlight the capacity and role of civil society organizations to redraw and re-define the borders and the rules of – and not only to take part in – the “governance game.”
