ABSTRACT

At the close of the twentieth century, Mexico’s marimba tradition continues to be concentrated in, but not limited to, the country’s southernmost state, Chiapas. e marimba is also heard in the neighboring states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Tabasco, as well as in the nation’s capital. Although marimba groups are scattered throughout the rest of the country, Mexico City and Chiapas display the most vibrant traditions. In Mexico multiple players on one or two marimbas are more common than solo players, the dominant performance style in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
