ABSTRACT

I composed this poem as a gesture of a context from which the following entry in this percussion encyclopedia would emerge. at is, dance (movement) and percussion (sound) have occurred separately and together in virtually every social group throughout the world. It is most interesting to this author to present, in the broadest terms, conceptual impressions of how and why dance and percussion have been interwoven, in hopes of inspiring further creative interaction among dancers and percussionists. For specic factual information on, for instance, the rst documented use of clapping sticks, I would respectfully refer you to books such as the remarkably authoritative Percussion Instruments and eir History by James Blades.1
