ABSTRACT

DEFINITION e xylophone is a percussion instrument consisting of a series of wooden bars (or logs), increased in length to sound a musical scale, and sounded by being struck with one or more hammers or sticks. Metal bar instruments (metallophones) or stone bar instruments (lithophones), while they may be similar in appearance, are not strictly classied as xylophones. In addition, since the mid1960s, the xylophone may also be dened as a percussion instrument consisting of a graduated series of bars made of synthetic materials (e.g., berglass or resins such as Kelon or Klyperon).
