ABSTRACT

The iconic films discussed in this chapter appeared in cinemas during 2011. Both strive in varying ways to illustrate forms of environmental and ethical responses to ‘end of the world’ scenarios and how best to face up to such cosmic imbalance. As clearly coded cautionary tales, they can also be read, at least allegorically, as reflecting the urgent need to respond well in advance to upcoming catastrophic changes to our planet, which can in turn be ascribed to long-term concerns around climate change and global warming in particular.
