ABSTRACT

The ear is composed of three quite distinct parts called the outer, middle, and inner ears. The only part we can see is the outer ear. See Fig. 111.1 for a cross-section of the entire structure.

The outer ear too can be partitioned into three parts:

Tympanic Membrane

An incoming sound wave is channeled by the pinna and external auditory meatus and, to a degree, modified by them until it reaches the tympanic membrane. At that point the middle ear comes into play.
