ABSTRACT

Boring (1950) is the classic history of experimental psychology up to midcentury, but the theoretical debates of local psychophysics are better summarized in the first eight chapters of Link's (1992) comprehensive treatment. The theory underlying ROC curves and procedures for data analysis are given in considerable technical detail in at least three places: Egan (1975), Green and Swets (1974), and Macmillan and Creelman (1991). Green and Swets is the classic in the field, but for beginners Macmillan and Creelman is probably more accessible. Laming (1986) developed a sweeping, novel view of local psychophysics. Although his book is not excessively mathematical, it is subtle and sophisticated.
