ABSTRACT

The action research presented in this chapter is an attempt to give voice to a cohort of postgraduate students, particularly with respect to how they see the postgraduate role in relation to other roles that they may view as important and possibly competing with the student role. As personal construct psychologists, the authors find that their practice as teachers, postgraduate research student supervisors and researchers has been influenced by the writings of George Kelly. The research has shown that students are able to reflect upon and articulate their views on the postgraduate role. Some participants have taken advantage of the optional personal feedback and support offered; many want to meet as a group to discuss the results and decide on the next stage. Supervisors should encourage more such group activity amongst postgraduate students. The various tools used within the enquiry can be taken further to form useful conversations within the process of supervision itself.
