ABSTRACT

In the context of postgraduate study, literature reviews may also be described in terms of process and product. The process of the literature review involves the researcher in exploring the literature to establish the status quo, formulate a problem or research enquiry, defend the value of pursuing the line of enquiry established, and compare the findings and ideas with his or her own. The product involves the synthesis of the work of others in a form which demonstrates the accomplishment of the exploratory process. The need for students to complete literature reviews early has been a matter of concern for some time. The Science and Engineering Research Council recommends that students should carry out literature surveys in the early stages in order to facilitate timely submission of the thesis. An important aspect of supervision involves helping students to determine the extent of their achievement in the literature review process.
