ABSTRACT

This chapter assumes that the quality of postgraduate research in universities depends largely on the quality management and supervision of postgraduate degree programmes and theses, and demonstrates that quality management and supervision can be improved through a systemic approach to staff development programmes with a multiplier effect. On the basis of principles of good supervisory practice derived from the literature and case studies at Griffith University, the chapter presents a model of staff development programmes on postgraduate research and supervision. The aims of these quality improvement programmes are to achieve professional development, effectiveness and efficiency in postgraduate supervision and to achieve a multiplier effect by 'training the trainers'. Some participants have conducted workshops on postgraduate supervision for supervisors and students in their departments. Some have formed groupings with other departments or institutions. Participants appreciated the opportunity to learn from expert speakers and senior consultants chosen for their expertise in postgraduate education and their experience in leading workshop discussions.
