ABSTRACT

The ability to use language grammatically correctly is a key component and an integral part of effective communication in the target language (TL). This chapter is based upon the premise that the development of communicative competence is a key goal for modern foreign languages (MFL) teaching and learning in the secondary school. Importantly, however, communicative competence is used here to encompass grammatical competence, socio-cultural competence, discourse competence and strategic competence (see Pachler 2000a). In particular, this chapter deals with grammatical competence as a subset of communicative competence.
