Rendall (2003) asks, in the context of the use of ICT in MFL, ‘What makes the average learner feel like a “loser” ’? and lists the following points:

These can be seen to apply more generally in (language) learning of course, and effective assessment can go some way to address the issues: ‘Successful learning occurs when learners have ownership of their learning; when they understand the goals they are aiming for; when, crucially, they are motivated and have the skills to achieve success’ (ARG, 1999: 2). The overarching question here is: how can learners learn better/more effectively and what role does assessment play in this process?
