ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate how the KMP can be utilized by dance/move - ment therapists who use movement as a language and a medium for diagnosis, treatment planning, intervention, and interaction. The KMP lends itself naturally to dance/movement therapy, synthesizing nonverbal behavior with psychological theory and interpretation (Merman, 1990). Both authors are dance/movement therapists who have benefited from the Kestenberg Movement Profile and its concepts in their clinical work. Vignettes from our work with a variety of child and adult clients are used to help illustrate the value in using this system. After a brief introduction to dance/movement therapy and its historic relationship to the KMP, relevant KMP concepts are described. Finally, we offer case material to exemplify clinical applications in each category of the KMP.
