Diversity in Practice

Family life cannot be adequately understood in a vacuum. Until recently, family therapy, despite its emphasis on social context, has paid little attention to the social matrix within which family life takes place. Ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexual orientation all convey a series of largely unspoken rules that organize current relationship patterns. The family of origin is the primary medium by which these worldviews become transmitted to individuals.
