ABSTRACT

Intimate, same-gender relationships are found across all cultural groups. However, their openness varies considerably, as does the social support for gay and lesbian relationships. For example, Denmark legalized marriage and divorce for same-gender couples in 1989 (Miller, 1995). In the United States, the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York's Greenwich Village is often seen as the historical landmark launching the drive for gay and lesbian rights. A police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, triggered 10 days of rioting by gays, lesbians, and transvestites (Arey, 1995). One eventual outcome of this movement was the removal of homosexuality from the list of psychiatric disorders in the mid-1970s.
