ABSTRACT

DNA is the basic substance that carries the hereditary information that directs the way in which an organism grows and develops. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is a long chain-like molecule formed of variously ordered repetitions of links called bases which are chemically connected to molecules of phosphoric acid. These acid molecules give the whole DNA molecule the properties of an acid. Other elements in this molecule include carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. In the process of cell division the DNA reproduces itself so that each new cell contains the same genetic information as the original cell.
