ABSTRACT
Harold Washington was the first African American to be elected mayor of the city of Chicago. During his time in office, he was supportive of civil rights efforts made by the gay and lesbian community and addressed one of the Gay Pride rallies in Lincoln Park. This proclamation is an example of the political responses made at the local level paralleling the mass demonstration of the March on Washington in October 1987.
