This text was delivered by Cleve Jones, the executive director of the NAMES Project, at the final display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in Washington, DC. The title refers to a slogan of then-President George H.W. Bush, who purposed to make the United States “a kinder, gentler nation” under his administration.
