ABSTRACT

The following remarks were made in October 1996 during the Walk Without Fear demonstration in Washington, DC, which began with a rally on Du Pont Circle at 7 p.m. and concluded with a candlelight vigil on 17th Street. Rosendall was at this time the president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC. Loron Lavoie and Ken Ludden, who are referred to in the text, were other speakers that evening, themselves recent victims of gay bashing. Tyra Hunter was a transgendered person of Washington, DC, who died in August 1995 due to injuries suffered in an auto acccident which an emergency medical worker refused to treat upon discovering Tyra's transgendered identity. A lawsuit brought against the city by Tyra's mother was decided in her favor on December 11, 1998, with an award of two million dollars.
