ABSTRACT

At noon on May 4, 1974, a rally was held in New York City on Christopher Street near Sheridan Square, attended by both leaders of the gay liberation movement and members of New York's city council, along with prominent civic figures and entertainers. The object of the rally was to rouse support for Intro #2, the gay rights bill then before the city council. Representing the gay liberation movement at this rally were Jean O'Leary, former president of Lesbian Feminist Liberation, Morty Manford, president of the Gay Activists Alliance, Ginny Vida, of the Intro #2 Committee of Lesbian Feminist Liberation, and Jim Owles, president of the Gay Democratic Club. This text is the joint statement issued by them on this occasion. In addition to the four groups represented at this rally, the Ad Hoc Committee of Gay Organizations included the Gay Academic Union, the Gay Legal Caucus, the National Gay Task Force, Dignity, and the Mattachine Society.
