ABSTRACT

This is the address given by author Valerie Taylor to the 1st Annual Lesbian Writers Conference in Chicago, Illinois, in September 1974. The “gentle and timorous creatures” she mentions were Sarah Ponsonby (1755–1831) and Lady Eleanor Butler (1739–1829), the “ladies of Llangollen.” Socarides and Bieber are psychoanalysts. Dr. Charles Socarides wrote The Overt Homosexual (Modern Library, 1962) and Dr. Irving Bieber (and colleagues) wrote Homosexuality: A Psychoanalytic Study (Random House, 1962).
