ABSTRACT

During the 1980 presidential campaign, the National Gay Task Force sent a survey to all candidates for the White House on gay rights issues. In response, the Carter White House replied to this survey with the following letter, written by Robert Strauss, Carter's campaign manager. The letter is addressed to Charles Brydon and Lucia Valeska, at that time codirectors of the NGTF, and was published in San Francisco's gay newspaper The Sentinel on March 7, 1980. HR-2074, referred to in the letter, was the gay civil rights bill then before Congress.
