ABSTRACT
Jack Nichols gave this keynote speech at the eighth Texas Gay Conference, held in Houston in 1981. The two texts of Walt Whitman quoted in the speech are, in their order of occurrence, the poem “A Woman Waits for Me” and the essay “Democratic Vistas.” The quotation from Edward Carpenter is taken from his autobiography, My Days and Dreams.
