ABSTRACT

I have been asked to write an historical account of my own research. I do so reluctantly because this seems like an undertaking that must involve hubris, and therefore it must be bad luck. I hope that I can respond to Irving Sigel’s request with humility. I am an ordinary, hard working, and honest scientist, and I hope that as a representative of active research workers this chapter will prove interesting to read. I plan to be honest and brief in the hopes that the chart of my progress may be interesting to young researchers who choose a similar course.
