Results for another utterance are shown in Figure lla.3. The solid lines show the movements for the utternnce [inpi], and the dotted lines illustrate the corresponding lingual and labial gestures from [idi] and [ipij. The conclusion follows that the basic consonantal gestures recorded from VCV utterances can be assembled to match closely the movement patterns for a VCCV utterance. The individual gestures of the tongue and lips may not qualify as icebergs, but they at least begin to look like ice cubes. I prefer to call them stereotypic articulatory movements (SAMs}.
